Majora's mask is not nearly as deep as its following makes it out to be. The reason this game has no specificity regarding Majora or the world of termina isn't because the game is Dark and shrouded in Mystery, it's because the devlopers just wanted to focus on the gameplay and not a bunch of lore theyput extremely subtle hints in. There's no rhyme or reason.Īnd also, the fanfiction theories are the worst. It's this stone palace or temple with obstacle rooms. Even Stone Tower, which is an amazing dungeon, has this issue. What the fuck is it? It's just a big cavern with puzzles and obstacles in it. When you explore it, there's a courtyard, there's sewers, there's balconies, the boss room is some sort of gallery. Which has the Forest Temple, it's clearly some sort of decrepit mansion. When you think of something like Ocarina. You just have a few areas that have obstacles and NPCs.
Like you're on this adventure scaling the really formidable mountain. Like Death Mountain for example, that's a great example of a 3D creating a feeling of going up. Sure, as a game, everything is well designed and fun and intuitive, but it totally lacks in so many aspects. Very little consideration is taken regarding the thematic placement of structures, or NPCs, or scenerary, and it's the same way with every area. It's a beach with some water, and some things to do strewn about. Majora's Mask has nothing like that.Each segment of the overworld is clearly just a themed area with assets from Ocarina applied in some sort of context. It comes back through Gerudo Valley and empties into lake hylia. The Zora river then flows into hyrule field, through the moat of the castle, then behid the mountains. You have the Zoar fountain, which flows into soras domain, which flows into the Zora river. It seemed like a totally believable fantasy overworld. In Ocarina of time the entire overworld seemed organic and flowed together. My biggest problem with Majora's Mask is how disjointed and tacked on much of the world feels.
